Senior Summer Kickoff

June is Seniors’ Month and the OSCC55+ is inviting you to kick-off the summer with us - virtually!

Join us here on Tuesday June 1st from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. as we present an amazing lineup of fitness classes, seminars, demonstrations, activities and more – all FREE!

Fill your senses, connect with others and enjoy new activities.  Don’t miss our headliner, Joan MacDonald from @trainwithJoan on Instagram, who will share her inspirational story of finding fitness in her seventies, opening up a whole new world of fun and vitality. 

 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.  Rise and Shine Yoga - Free

Increase your flexibility, improve your blood circulation and restore balance to your body. Reduce tension and raise your energy levels. Mat work is used.  It is recommended that participants wear comfortable clothing. Mat and straps (or alternative) are needed and yoga blocks and blankets are recommended.

Instructor Bio: I discovered yoga in my 30's as a way to help manage my arthritis symptoms. My first class stirred something deep inside that led me to yoga teacher training, something I never imagined I would do. I was equally surprised to find out how suitable I was for teaching seniors yoga and even more surprised at how much I enjoy teaching each class and interacting with the seniors who are vibrant, energetic, and full of life. They inspire me to be my best. My classes are designed for everyone, no matter their age or fitness level. Modifications are always given to make each class inclusive. I try to keep classes light-hearted and fun but still respectful of this ancient tradition.

 9:05 a.m. to 9:35 a.m.  Breakfast Smoothies - Free

Feeling sluggish? Need an immune boost? Join Jess as she demonstrates how to make a smoothie recipe with "superfood" additions such as chia seeds, kale, flax seeds, protein powders, hemp seeds, etc.  Participants will also learn why each food is good for them (aka the nutritional content). Don’t be intimidated by these superfoods, these smoothies are easy to make and taste great!

Instructor Bio: Jessica is the Programs and Service Clerk at OSCC55+.  You may have seen her around the Delpark or John Street Branches.  She is also a yoga instructor and a health and wellness coach in her spare time. She has a love for creating healthy recipes and looks forward to sharing her knowledge and passion for healthy foods with you!

 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.   Chair Zumba - Free

This class has all the great music and moves of Zumba but you are seated in a chair.  You will work up a sweat with the combined strength and resistance training from the movements. Chair needed. 

 

Instructor: Carolina Batica 

 

Instructor Bio: I'm Carolina Batica, a Zumba Instructor with lots of experience including Aqua Zumba, Gold Zumba, kids Zumba, Toning Zumba and much more! I am also a Soulbody instructor. But this is not just my job, this is my passion! I'm giving you 100% of what I know, keeping you motivated to be fit and happy.

 9:40 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  Powerful Tools for Caregivers - Free

You may have come into the caregiving role gradually, because your care receiver has a disease like dementia or Parkinson’s. You may become a caregiver suddenly because of an event like a stroke or accident. Regardless of the path to this role, few people have the skills, tools and knowledge to understand how to ensure they are looking after their own health, while caring for someone else.  In this presentation, Diana will provide an over-view of how the Powerful Tools for Caregiver six week workshop can support you in your journey as a caregiver.

Instructor Bio: Diana has worked with the Central East Self-Management Program for the last 8.5 years as a program lead and facilitator for health education events and Self-Management workshops for people with chronic health conditions and their caregivers. Diana’s personal experience as a caregiver drives her passion to make the Powerful Tools for Caregivers program available to all caregivers in need of support. 

 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Seniors Camera Club Showcase - Free

The OSCC 55+ Camera Club will be showcasing  a slideshow of members photos for the 2021 Seniors Summer Kickoff! Each month the members take part in an activity referred to as GYCO (Get Your Camera Out). This activity encourages our members to do something new each month with their cameras.

Join Naturopathic Doctor, Nicole Panethere as she shares 'A Whole Body Approach to Healthy Aging' while highlighting major organs and how to optimize their health.

Instructor Bio: Dr Nicole Panethere, ND is a naturopathic doctor practicing in Whitby. She has a general practice treating many conditions including digestive dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain and mental health concerns. She aims to find the root cause of illness and utilizes a variety of natural therapies to assist her patients in achieving optimal wellness.

Instructor Bio: Prior to my emigration to Canada I obtained my Royal Society of Arts membership which encompassed a wide array of mediums, pen and ink being my major. In Canada I am certified in Acrylic, Watercolours, Drawing, Zentangle Inspired Art and Coloured Pencil. I am registered with Grumbacher as a fine art teacher. Art is my passion and was my calming source during my 30 year banking career.

Break a sweat with this fun dance workout comprised of gentle and low impact choreography steps. Music includes salsa, bachata, cumbia and more!

Instructor Bio: My name is Gladys, I am an experienced fitness instructor from Colombia. I have been a volunteer at the YMCA Oshawa since 2012, and have taught dance for more than 15 years. My passions include dancing Cumbia, Salsa, Bachata among others.

Don’t miss our headliner, Joan MacDonald, internet sensation and fitness & health influencer @trainwithjoan with over 1.3 million Instagram followers. Joan will share her inspirational story of finding fitness in her 70’s, investing in her health and well-being while opening up a whole new world of fun and vitality. Program will allow time for Q&A.

Speaker Bio: Joan started her fitness journey at 70 with the goal to get off her medication and to improve her overall health. With no prior gym experience Joan was able to turn her life around through daily exercise, meal planning and a new outlook on life. Her decision to document her journey on Instagram has led to many positive changes in her life including continually inspiring and motivating others to start their own life changing journeys. Joan can be found @trainwithjoan on Instagram, her page features many exercise videos, inspirational stories, meal plan ideas and proves that anyone at any age can make a change for the better.

 

1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Essentrics - Free

Essentrics is a full body workout that rapidly changes the shape of your body through a dynamic and fluid combination of strengthening and stretching. This program rebalances the body, prevents and treats injuries and unlocks tight joints. Yoga mat needed & chair for balance.

Instructor Bio: My name is Leah Maguire and I have been teaching Essentrics Aging Backwards for about 4 years. I discovered Essentrics about 15 years ago when I was trying to relieve back pain. I have been doing the classes ever since. This program, also known as Classical Stretch, has been a very popular fitness series on PBS for over 20 years. What I love about the program are the multiple benefits of all round conditioning, increased strength, greater flexibility, greater joint mobility, stress relief, and no impact cardio. Anyone can do Essentrics Aging Backwards and have fun and stay fit

This 45 minute class features 15 minutes of cardio, 15 minutes of strength training and 15 minutes of stretching for a full body workout. A resistance band, set of weights and a chair is needed for this class. It is recommended that participants wear comfortable clothes for this class.

Instructor: Katie Bonikowsky

Instructor Bio: Katie had been teaching Zumba and other fitness classes with the OSCC for 8 years. Before that she was a teacher, but after getting her Senior’s Fitness instructor certification through the CCAA at Western she realized her passion for teaching fitness and started doing it full time. Katie also has her Personal Training certification from CanFitPro. Katie loves teaching group fitness, and working with all the members at the OSCC.

Judy O’Dell, YTT500
Judy has 5+ years of teaching both workouts in person and virtually. She has just completed RYT500, an accreditation in Advanced Yoga Teacher Training. Judy is also certified to teach Mat Pilates.
She currently teaches at LA Fitness, OSCC55+ (Oshawa Seniors), and also teaches private students. Her students, beginners and intermediate, appreciate her teaching style focused on correct alignment, thus avoiding injury.
